Training for managers of distributed teams.

As organizations continue to adopt hybrid or remote work models, managers are increasingly finding themselves in new and unfamiliar territory.

But managing a remote or hybrid workforce is not a whole new ballgame requires a combination of classic, time-tested skills, such as the ability to calibrate one’s leadership style based on the the experience of the team. But applying these skills at a distance demands a more intentional and deliberate approach, with some subtle twists. Our training course for managers of remote, hybrid and distributed teams aims to help managers connect the old way of doing things to a new way of working together.

One key change is the need for increased communication and transparency. In a remote or hybrid work environment, it can be easy for employees to feel disconnected from their colleagues and managers, leading to feelings of isolation and disengagement. To counter this, managers need to learn to host regular check-ins and maintain clear communication channels.

Another important consideration is the need for increased trust and autonomy. In a traditional office setting, managers may rely heavily on direct observation and oversight to ensure their employees are working effectively. In a remote or hybrid environment, however, this is often not feasible, and managers must learn to enable their employees to work independently and take ownership of their work. This may require setting clear expectations and goals, providing regular feedback, and offering additional support and resources as needed.

Managers may also need to adapt their approach to team building and collaboration. In a remote or hybrid work environment, team members may not have the opportunity to interact with one another as frequently or informally as they would in an office setting. To combat this, managers need to devise ways to build team identity and mutual trust – at a distance.

Finally, managers need to consider the specific issues posed by remote work, such as time zone differences, home distractions, and the need for work-life balance. This may require additional flexibility and support from managers, such as offering flexible work schedules or providing resources for mental health and wellness.
